6 Ways Your Commercial Retail Property Might Be Failing ADA Compliance

When was the last time you thought about ADA compliance at your commercial retail property — inside and out?

Here’s the truth: ignoring accessibility risks fines, lawsuits, and lost customers. And the surprising part? Many fixes are simpler (and cheaper) than you think. Here are 6 common slip-ups we see all the time.

1) Cramped Aisles That Block Wheelchairs

Those pretty product displays? They can turn into obstacle courses. ADA requires at least 36 inches of clear aisle space so customers using mobility devices can navigate comfortably.

2) Checkout Counters That Are Too High

Your main counter may work for most, but you need at least one lowered section (36 inches or less) for customers using wheelchairs or scooters. Bonus: it’s also great for kids and seniors.

3) Dressing Rooms Without Accessibility Features

At least one fitting room needs an accessible layout — wide doors, space to turn, grab bars, and an accessible bench. A room labeled “accessible” but lacking features doesn’t count!

4) Poor Signage and Lighting

ADA isn’t just about physical spaces — high-contrast, easy-to-read signs and good lighting help all customers, including those with visual impairments, navigate your store confidently.

5) Entrances That Aren’t Actually Accessible

That steep step or broken ramp at your main door? Not okay. Customers should be able to enter through the same main entrance without barriers or needing special help.

6) The Parking Lot Mess

Even if your store is perfect inside, your parking lot could trip you up. ADA requires a specific number of marked accessible parking spaces with proper signage, clear striping, and an accessible route to your entrance. Faded paint, missing signs, or sloped paths can all put you at risk — and frustrate customers before they even get inside.
